As Michigan State wanted to evolve its athletic identity away from being the Aggies (as most agricultural schools tended to be known), they held a naming contest in the 1920’s. Though they first landed on the “Staters,” sports writers George S. Alderton and Dale Stafford found “Spartans” among the nickname entries, and went with that instead.
